It was reported that a Vietnam ship was rammed by a Chinese vessel injuring six Vietnamese ship crews, also, a Chinese vessel blasted a Vietnamese ship with water cannon. This incident was due to China’s drilling activity in disputed waters. According to Vietnam warships and patrol vessels are accompanying the oil rig to protect it from Vietnam military. Vietnam vowed to protect its sovereignty over the territory.

On the other hand, US have expressed its concern over disputes in South China Sea saying, “Sovereignty over the Paracel Islands is disputed” and international law must be implemented to solve the increasing tension in the region.

Jen Psaki US Department of State Spokesperson said, “China’s decision to introduce an oil rig accompanied by numerous government vessels for the first time in waters disputed with Vietnam is provocative and raises tensions. This unilateral action appears to be part of a broader pattern of Chinese behavior to advance its claims over disputed territory in a manner that undermines peace and stability in the region. We are also very concerned about dangerous conduct and intimidation by vessels operating in this area. We call on all parties to conduct themselves in a safe and professional manner, preserve freedom of navigation, exercise restraint, and address competing sovereignty claims peacefully and in accordance with international law.”

China on the contrary said United States has nothing to do with oil drilling of Beijing and is not in the position to create unnecessary comments.

Tension in the South China Sea had significantly increased over the past few days. Philippines was also engaged with Chinese fisherman who were caught with endangered species of turtles at Half Moon Shoal (Hasa Hasa) in Spratly Islands. China urged the Philippine government to release the fishermen and avoid any provocative actions.
