House Reps seek to fortify Kalayaan group of Islands

House Bill entitled, “AN ACT APPROPRIATING THE SUM OF ONE BILLION PESOS (P1,000,000,000) FOR THE IMPROVEMENT, FORTIFICATION AND BUILDING OF STRUCTURES IN THE KALAYAAN GROUP OF ISLANDS,” seeks to enhance defense capabilities and tourism industry in Kalayaan group of islands.

Representative Rufus Rodriguez of 2nd District, Cagayan de Oro City and his younger brother Representative Maximo Rodriguez, Jr. for Abante Mindanao said in the House Bill 4167 that PhP1 billion “shall be used to build new structures in the Islands like harbors, berthing facilities, and other structures necessary to promote tourism in the Islands and increase the defensive capabilities of the Philippines to strenghten Philippines’ claim over it.”

If approved, existing airstrip in Pag-asa Island at Kalayaan will be repaired and defensive structures will be built. Also, the bill aims to make Kalayaan a tourist spot.
